...And you won't even need a decoder ring to read them! Just in time for Valentine's Day 2017, David Yurman is releasing new cable cuff bracelets from a collection designated DY Whispers—fitting given each of the pieces quietly transmits a message but only to the wearer. Last year, I made the suggestion that David Yurman not just embrace Lunar New Year in marketing but produce a singular themed bauble in celebration. Well, heck to the hey, I got everything I wanted and more this year... sort of.

Review: The David Yurman Bubblegum Pinky Ring

Released to the public on September 2 but teased for weeks previous, the David Yurman Bubblegum Pinky Ring has been called many things. "Limited edition." "Scratch and sniff." "Entry level." "Brilliant." "Bizarre." Allow me now to add another voice--albeit this one very loud--to the cacophony of media buzz. Here is my full review, objective, unbiased, and (in a spirit of full disclosure) written after five days of wear.

Background

The David Yurman Bubblegum Pinky Ring is available in five varieties, each of a different color and fragrance. Yes, that's right. Fragrance. The rings feature inlays of scented resin set in 18K gold. The five flavors are cotton candy (blue set in yellow gold), grape (violet in yellow gold), bubblegum (pink in rose gold), licorice (black in yellow gold), and peppermint (white in rose gold, shown throughout this post). The rings are produced in sizes 3 to 5, are part of a "limited edition" collection (whatever that means), and retail for $875 apiece. They are being sold as Evan Yurman designs. (Remember, dear reader, that David Yurman's son, Evan, was named the company's Chief Design Director in 2013.)

The Aesthetic

No buried lead here: The rings are simple and stunning. A critique commonly lodged against David Yurman is that the company's designs are overwrought, over-designed, if you will. There is too much going on. Not so with the Bubblegum Pinky. It is sleek and straightforward, which is, in this case, a very much winning combination. Do not confuse sleek, simple, and straightforward with "safe," however. There is a definite boldness here--I mean, check out that chevron shank. It is just presented subtly.

The Wearability

The DY Bubblegum Pinky wears rather weightlessly, which is good news because, really, who wants the humble pinky finger pressed under the yoke of some unwieldy behemoth? No, the ring is incredibly light and, per usual with DY, boasts a "comfort-fit" interior, ensuring a snug but low-catch embrace of the digit. The care instructions that come with the ring warn against exposing it to acetone, hair spray, perfume, soap, hand washing, swimming pools, direct sunlight, and intense heat.

The David Yurman F/W '15-16 Press Preview Roundup

This week David Yurman previewed its fall-winter '15-16 collections to select press at its corporate headquarters in New York City. Out of love for you, dear reader, I've gone ahead and done the tiresome, time-consuming work of combing through social media--and scanning every single post tagged "David Yurman"--to get you the scoop. Here's what I've been able to dig up thus far:

Coming soon are bow rings designed by Evan Yurman in honor of and tribute to his mother, Sybil

There are conflicting reports as to whether or not the pieces are designed for wear primarily on the pinky finger. What is clear, however, is that Evan designed the pieces for Sybil who, apparently, has always desired a bow ring. Previewed were rings with pave-set rubies and sapphires (see below). The price point is unknown at this time.

Friday's here and with it comes a(nother) typo on DavidYurman.com to add some levity, you know, just for good measure. Yes, our culture has already assimilated a "McSteamy" and Boeing's Dreamliner and so why not Streamiline? Take a look:

It's unclear at this point what the neologism "Streamiline" means. A line made or consisting of streams? Possibly. A cable design capable of supporting streaming video content? It's possible. A case of hurried typing being prematurely published? Likely. All the same, don't you think a call to David Yurman for clarification is in order? Yes, I think I'll reach out. "Hello, ma'am or sir. Connect me to the manager of your Streamiline Collection, please. ...Yes, that's right: I said 'Stream-ee-line.' Yes, I'll hold."

Not Just for Justin Timberlake Anymore: Yurman Releases Lightning Men's Pieces to Public

Did you know David Yurman outfitted Justin Timberlake in all those haut accessories he donned on his 20/20 Experience World Tour last year? It's true, and I now enter this now-forty-three-week-old Instagram post as evidence:

Whoever snapped this clearly needs 
a lesson in visual staging.

The good news is, a mere ten months later, modified versions of the pieces designed exclusively for JT are now available to the public. Already in boutiques and slowly coming online are lightning bolt pieces from what appears to be a newly-christened Symbols Collection.

Exclusive: David Yurman's Limited-Edition Honeycomb Meteorite Men's Rings Rocket into Boutiques

I am not a hand model. I do not profess to being a hand model.

It brings me great pleasure to report that David Yurman's Meteorite Titanium Honeycomb Mini-Collection, first previewed back in November 2014, has finally fully launched; the rings bearing this signature motif are available as limited-edition boutique exclusives. Here's what you need to know:

- There are two styles of Meteorite Titanium Honeycomb ring now available--one is the signet piece posted here, the other is of a band shape.

- The rings are of extreme limited edition with only 26 signet style produced and 36 band style. Each comes numbered and bearing a "limited edition" engraving.

- The rings are available in sizes 9, 10, 11, and 12 and retail in the $1,000-2,000 range.

- The pieces feature a sterling silver shank with meteorite overlay and black titanium shell.

- These limited-edition designs can only be purchased at David Yurman boutiques.

- A design executive has exclusively confirmed to DYMANia that these are the exact, "as-intended" designs originally previewed back in November 2014. Apparently a modified, easier-to-manufacture signet-style Meteorite Titanium Honeycomb ring was developed and quietly released over the winter but then shortly thereafter recalled due to "the compromised aesthetic."

- The tag pendant from the collection, which was originally released in fall of '14, has been pulled from DavidYurman.com and appears, for now, only available through boutique purchase or special order. It retails for $1200 (chain sold separately). It is unclear if additional product will be produced as part of a limited-edition set.

Briefs: DY on Nordstrom.com, in the Twin Cities, and with Rubies in Titanium

With this week's frigid temperatures comes hot David Yurman news. Here's a rundown of developments:

Like to buy DY online, but don't like shopping at DavidYurman.com, NeimanMarcus.com, or Saks.com? If so, first, dang, you're picky, and second, hey, you're in luck as you may now click your way to Nordstrom.com for a considerable range of David Yurman product. With DY counters having already come to so many Nordstrom locations, it's not altogether surprising the retailer has moved--with DY's blessing, no doubt--to sell Yurman over the Internet. At the time of writing, Nordstrom.com offers 315 distinct women's pieces and 129 men's, which is a considerably robust inventory, I suppose, when compared to offerings available on NeimanMarcus.com and Saks.com. That being said (and as one might expect), the widest selection of DY available anywhere online is at DavidYurman.com. Still, it's refreshing to see an authorized retailer stocking David Yurman men's rings in sizes other than the default 10 and 11. (I'm looking at you, NeimanMarcus.com and Saks.com. Get with it!)

Moving right along, Allison Kaplan of Ali Shops reported this morning that DY will soon open its first boutique in the Twin Cities area (i.e., Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota) at the shopping center Galleria in Edina. While this planned opening has been announced, the official date of said has not.

Finally, I simply have to share with you my new objects of craving--men's pieces at which I cannot stop staring, which debuted on DavidYurman.com only last week and which are, dear reader, the pavé ruby black titanium additions to the Streamline Collection. Man, I thought the sapphire-on-Ti pieces eye catching, but I'll tell you what, these ruby-lined designs are the stuff of dreams. There are three items featuring this look presently showcased online--the tag (pictured, $5915) and two rings, one with three rows of stones ($3500) and one with two ($2650). 

To the DY designer who envisioned such beauts, I say hats off!

A shortened URL accompanying the image, leading this DY fanatic to assume (giddily) the product was now "live" on DavidYurman.com, but alas, clicking through takes one to a "New Designs, New Materials" page on the site on which the items are (drat!) missing.

Oh, DY's social media team, how you do toy with my emotions. I wanted (expected?) item descriptions, price points, and hi-res studio shots. Instead, I was left with the ability to purchase Griffin (and you know already my thoughts on that collection.) Harumph. I'm going to go stew for a while. You know where to find me. Are these designs available now online? ...Are you kidding me? Much to my our mutual frustration, not a single piece from the F/W '13-14 men's line has debuted on DavidYurman.com. As evidenced by this 'gram, however, the pieces are available in the Nashville boutique, whose telephone number is 615.298.1190. (Yes, I had that on file.) Give 'em a ring, and surely they'll be happy to Fed-Ex one of these beauties to you.

At an inconveniently late hour on a Friday night, Twitter user @peterjprins posted a link to a site on which a David Yurman Willow Collection promotional video had been uploaded. The clip, which is 2:11 in length and classic Yurman in aesthetic, is everything the F/W '13-14 campaign videos should have been and more. Beguiling, seductive, and characteristically artful, it is not to be missed. Click through for additional screen captures and a link to the clip.

At Last, a David Yurman F/W '13-14 Men's Collection Preview (Now with Tag Necklaces!)

Late last night Instagram user @burniebear shared these (see below) images, which were captured, it seems, at a DY fall preview event at/for Nordstrom Perimeter in Atlanta, Georgia. Revealed are three bracelets and several rings, mostly band-style, from David Yurman's F/W '13-14 Men's Collection. Revel in the artistry. (My impressions are posted as image captions.)

Of the three designs showcased here,
my initial preference is for the middle one,
though I suppose I should see all in their full glory
before making any verdicts.

Get a Glimpse at the David Yurman F/W '13-14 Women's Collection

Instagram user @emilylkane was in Menlo Park, New Jersey earlier today previewing the David Yurman F/W '13-14 Women's Collection and was kind enough to upload for public consumption these collages of sumptuous new product:

And So the Waiting Game Begins...

Fall 2013. It's coming. It's imminent, even. Last year, on August 2, 2012, David Yurman teased its fall campaign. On August 8th, then, the company began releasing images from said campaign. What I'm saying, folks, is that big things are coming, which is why there has been so little to report over the past month and a half or so. The only "news" (if you can call it that) from that period was this: a survey conducted by The Luxury Institute revealed the top three jewelry brands preferred by ultrawealthy women--those with a minimum net worth of $5 million--are, in descending order, most beloved first, Tiffany & Co. (blech), David Yurman (woo!), and Cartier.

And that was it. Then, last week, our friend @gregmaczko posted this to Instagram:

Pictured are soon-to-be-released additions to the men's meteorite line. Greg is especially fond of the rose gold signet ring featured in the bottom frame (and so am I!).

David Yurman Releases New S/S '13 Men's Catalog

You have the right (and privilege) to be awed by DY's latest men's collection catalog, which is presently on its way to stores, boutiques, and customers' homes nationwide and also available for online viewing. In this booklet the viewer is treated to another a showcase of dazzling product, more poignant in-line-with-the-DY-lifestyle quotations, and another series of shots featuring Ben Hill, the face of David Yurman Men for two campaigns now. (He was preceded by Jon Kortajarena). See below for screen captures of the digital catalog and profiles of fresh-from-the-studio DY men's product with, of course, my own original commentary (because, yes, I just can't help myself).

The shot on the left is, in my opinion, the most outstanding and memorable from the forty-page booklet. (I'm indifferent to the array of tags and necklaces on the adjacent page.)

Yes, of course the Griffin Collection is featured, and no, it has yet really to grow on me. I do, however, love the Armory cross ring displayed in the shot on the left. Retailing for $395, it is one of the most affordable pieces of Yurman out there.

I had to include this spread. These are the offerings from the catalog I love most of all. Just my luck, though: They are Signature Collection high-jewelry offerings, which means their high style is paired with an equally high price tag. Ah well. The signet piece on the left page with the lines of green color--the stone is opalized wood--will be mine in my dreams, if nowhere else.

Maritime rope design? Check.
1.29 carats of diamonds? Check.
The price? A fair $3900.

David Yurman Targets New Market Segment with Griffin Collection

"Bold" is a word I'd use to describe David Yurman's fresh-from-the-studio Griffin Collection. "Curious" is another. As I've mentioned in an earlier post, these designs are anything but quintessential, classic Yurman. In fact, if it weren't for the shape of and antiquing on the tag necklace (see above), I'm not sure I'd even make the Yurman connection. I'd think Stephen Webster or Scott Kay. (I know. Scott Kay. Gross.) That's not to say I dislike what DY is doing here. It's just that these creations, I think, are not for me. While the motifs employed are designed, according to David Yurman copy, to "conjure... symbolic power," I don't think I'm--what's the right word?--burly enough for these to mesh with my look. The designs are sharp, hard, and, well, almost angry. They have an Armory Collection feel to them with the heavy antiquing and use of spikes on the amulets, but I can wear and pull off Armory, whereas I don't think I can Griffin.

And so for whom has this collection been prepared? For whatever reason, I see men with thick sausage
fingers working (and rocking) Griffin. I see the collection on gents who fancy the mythical (and mystical, for that matter). I see it on those whose chest hair is ample, those who wear only jackets of leather, those whose  musk is heavy and whose beards are dense. Will these men pay for Yurman? Will Yurman actively target them in advertising? Only time will tell, I suppose. I will say this, though: It is going to be an interesting fall/winter for the DY Men's Collection. At this point, what comes next is likely anybody's guess.
